Surrounded by family, Evelyn "Penny" Quick died April 11 in Dallas, Texas where she had been living since October 2010. She would have been 92 years old in six weeks. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Nicholas Wilson Quick, age 90; her son, Mark Quick of Dallas and his wife, Linda; her granddaughter, Erin Carlyle of Houston and husband, Jeff and her great grandchildren Callie and Jackson Carlyle. She is also survived by sister-in-law Wanda McPhee of Jacksonville, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents Robina Telfer Johnson and Esper Johnson, her brother Ted Johnson and his wife Rose.
Born in Morris, Illinois, Penny attended Southern Illinois University and received her education degree in 1939. Everyday thereafter, until her retirement, she was thinking about her students. She taught in Grundy County, Illinois while Nick served in World War II and when he returned his career moved them to College Station, Texas; Wichita Falls, Texas; and Little Rock, Arkansas. When she arrived in Statesboro, Georgia in 1969 she stated quite firmly, that this was home and she wasn't moving again. She kept her vow until poor health required them to move closer to family.
She will be remembered as a good friend and citizen, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a dedicated educator and as someone who possessed a dry wit that was faster than sound.
A private service will be held in Dallas on Saturday, April 16. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Foundation for Public Education in Bulloch County, in care of The Board of Education, 150 Williams Road, Statesboro, GA 30458.
