Born in Minneapolis, MN, on January 27, 1940, Gene was the son of Steven Sr. and Frances Catherine Shorba. He was raised in the Catholic faith, attending Holy Rosary Elementary School before graduating from DeLaSalle High School, where he excelled in both academics and basketball. After serving in the Navy, Gene joined the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), marking the beginning of a remarkable career dedicated to service.
Gene married the love of his life, Martha Anda Shorba, in Greece and moved back to Minneapolis, where he embraced the Orthodox Christian faith and was chrismated by Father Anthony Coniaris. Gene's career took them to Greece, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and Florida before settling in Texas. Together, Gene and Anda shared a beautiful partnership filled with love, cooking, baking, dancing, traveling, and creating cherished memories with family. They were blessed with two children, Helen and Steven.
Gene enjoyed a successful career as a warehouse manager and comptroller, eventually becoming an audit specialist at Howard Shultz and Associates, where his dedication and expertise were highly regarded. He was actively involved in the Dallas Chapter of The Order of American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA). Gene enjoyed reading, Western shows, the Minnesota Vikings, casinos, scratch-offs, horse racing, and attending his family's performances. As a loving Dad and Popou, Gene’s warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anda; his parents, Steven Sr. and Frances; and his brothers, Gerald and Steven Jr. He is survived by his two children, Helen (and husband Jim) and Steven; his two grandchildren, Martheya (and husband Andrew) and Malena, as well as their father, Jim; and two great-grandchildren, Catherine and Dorothy.
Gene will be fondly remembered for his generosity, positivity, and unwavering belief in the importance of family, embodied in his cherished saying, “family first.”
