He was born in Brownwood, Texas on February 7, 1930, to Arthur and Opal Haynie. He lived through the Depression with his family, helping his father run a small grocery business. This early life instilled a love for him to serve others which can be seen throughout the rest of his life. After graduating from Brownwood High School in 1948, he completed two years of college at Howard Payne University prior to the Korean War. He enlisted in the Air Force, trained as a cryptographer at Scott Field Air Force Base in Bellville, Illinois, and was eventually assigned to James Connally Air Force Base in Waco, Texas. While stationed in Waco, Texas, Edward married his long-time sweetheart, Marie Griffin of Abilene, Texas, on June 7, 1952. They had met five years previously, at ages 15 and 17, at a Boy Scout Camp Dance in 1947. Once married, he was assigned by the Air Force to Hickam Field in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he and Marie lived before returning to Texas in January of 1954. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage before Marie passed away in 2018.
Having started school before the war, Edward returned when the war ended and graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in August 1955 and his Masters in Education in August of 1957. Edward had a career in education as a classroom teacher in Dallas ISD from 1957-1993. He taught at City Park Elementary, T. C. Marsh Middle School, and his final 15 years at W. T. White High School as a government economics teacher.
Edward had a personal relationship with Jesus, attending Highland Baptist Church in Dallas, Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, and St. Andrews Methodist Church in Plano.
