Doris was born to Milton Crockett and Vera Gladys in 1926. She had one older brother Roy Eugene and two younger brothers – Marvin Charles and Robert Arthur. They grew up in Dallas and then later moved to Fruitdale, Texas.
Doris graduated from Adamson High School in Dallas, Texas and married Samuel (Sam) Edgar Varner in October 1944 when Sam was on leave from the Navy during WWII. They made their home in Dallas and had four daughters - Tex Ann, Kay Lynn, Susan Jo, and Mona Lea, before relocating to Garland and having another daughter Joan Beth.
Doris is survived by her children: Susan Varner, Mona Varner, and Beth Stern (Robert C. Stern), grandson John Kelly Malmquist, and great-granddaughter Abigail Rose Malmquist. She was preceded in death by her husband Sam, brother Roy, and daughters Kay and Ann.
Doris lived in Garland where she loved supporting her daughters in their school activities and sewing clothes for them. The family joined First Lutheran Church in Garland in 1961 where she was an active member and sang in the choir, taught Vacation Bible School, and served on many committees and the church council. She later worked for JCPenny for seventeen years before she retired. She served for over ten years as a volunteer with the Baylor Auxiliary at Baylor Hospital in Garland and also delivered for Meals on Wheels.
Doris had many interests and hobbies. She had an extensive collection of bells from many states and foreign countries given to her by family and friends. She also made ceramic dolls and dressed them in period clothes that she sewed herself.
In 2017 Doris moved to Concord, CA to be near her two youngest daughters and joined St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill.
Doris had a generous spirit and unconditional love for all people, animals, and the Texas Rangers. Doris wanted to be remembered as someone who loved her family and her Lord. She passed away on May 9, 2020 and will be missed by all who knew her.
