Dolores Reed Ferrera, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away August 16, 2023, at home with her daughter by her side. She was born July 7, 1937, in Manito, Illinois. After being raised in San Jose, Illinois she graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Home Economics and a minor in Education. Dolores started her career with Kraft Foods in Chicago, where she met the love of her life, Joe, who preceded her to heaven in 2000. Shortly after marrying, they moved to Charlotte, N.C. where their daughter Laura was born. They then relocated to New York where they raised Laura and lived for 18 years.
Dolores held various jobs in the food industry including as a freelance food stylist for TV commercials and national advertisements until she joined American Airlines in 1969, eventually becoming Manager of Food and Beverage Design. It was during her tenure at American, that they relocated to Dallas. After spending two decades at American, Dolores retired and started her own consultancy business. She was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star Chapter of the DeGrazier Masonic Lodge, where she served in various capacities, including Worthy Matron from 2000-2003.
In addition to her husband, Dolores is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Helen Reed; is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Scott Weiner, grandsons, Brandon & Kevin; and siblings, Donna Svendsen, Steven and Stanley Reed. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.
Visitation to be held at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 23rd from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held at the Cox Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 24th at 1pm. A brief interment service will follow at 2:30 pm at the Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Cards or memorials may be sent to her family at 18709 Shremor Drive, Derwood, MD 20855.
