On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, after a remarkable 90 years of life on this earth, Dr. David R. Webb, Jr. passed away peacefully at home in Dallas, Texas and rose to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Dr. David Robert Webb, Jr. was born on May 7, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri to his parents David Robert Webb, Sr. and Verna Lamb Webb. His parents moved the family to Dallas in 1946. David attended Highland Park High School and was a member of the varsity Football and Baseball teams. In the Fall of 1951, he enrolled at Texas A&M, then transferred to The University of Texas, joined the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and went on to complete his undergraduate studies.
After returning to Dallas, he met the love of his life, Tucean Pennington. They were married on October 21, 1961 and just recently cherished their 62nd Anniversary! David was preceded in death by his parents, and his younger sister, Judy Halla. David is survived by his wife, Tucean; daughter, Tucean Franks (Craig); son, David R. Webb, III (Julie), Suzanne Webb, and John Webb (Erin). He also treasured his 6 grandchildren – Austin Franks, Hunter Franks, Ryan Franks, Whitney Webb, Jack Webb and Meg Webb. He was ALWAYS spotted attending their respective sporting and other events.
David knew all along that his passion was to enter the field of Medicine. He attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and earned his degree from the School of Medicine. From there, he began his career in a rotating Internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he also completed his General Surgery Residency. In 1961, he began his Orthopaedic Residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He subsequently served at Parkland Hospital, Scottish Rite Hospital, and then completed his Chief Residency at Parkland. In 1964, he commenced a 34 year Orthopaedic Surgery private practice in Dallas.
In addition to his medical practice, David served as the team doctor for the Highland Park Football team for 30 years and was inducted as a Distinguished Alumni, receiving the Highlander Award in 2008. David also served as the team doctor for the Dallas Tornado Soccer Club through the 1970's. He took great pride in helping the respective teams and their injured players.
During his lifetime, David proudly served/supported/participated in the following organizations: American Medical Assoc., American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Texas Medical Assoc., Dallas County Medical Society, Southern Medical Assoc., Theodore Roosevelt Assoc., Quiet Birdmen, Businessmen's Flying Assoc., CAF, North American Training Assoc., T-34 Assoc., Bird Dog Assoc., Soaring League of N Tx, Frontiers of Flight Museum, Dallas Country Club, The Turtle Creek Breakfast Club, and the Pillars of the HPISD Community.
In 2014, he joined University Park United Methodist Church, was baptized, and was a regular attendee.
Last and perhaps most importantly, David had a deep passion for Aviation. As a teenager he learned to build and fly model airplanes and won many competitions. He earned his pilots license while in high school. While the early years in medicine didn't allow the time needed for flying, he did reestablish his pilots license in the 80's and went on to enjoy flying recreationally in many airplanes, including: Piper Cub, Cessna, T34, Bucker Jungmann Biplane, and his favorite plane of all, the North American T-6 Texan, a World War II trainer aircraft. He loved being a part of a group of fellow T-6 aviators who would perform formation fly-overs to honor people or specific events.
The family would also like to thank George Onyango and Joe Nyakio for their unconditional love and care for David during his final months.
Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, November 2, at University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth Blvd, Dallas, Texas.
