Charles graduated from Highland Park High School, attended the University of the South (Sewanee) and graduated from Southern Methodist University. While in college, Charles earned an advertising degree and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Charles met his wife, Joan Bower Martin, in high school, married and raised his family in University Park. Charles was a wonderful father, grandfather, husband and friend to many. He was an only child and loved his summers growing up at Camp Longhorn. He passed along that opportunity to all of his children and grandchildren as well – what a gift. Attaway to go, Poppi!
Charles loved to sing and play his guitar. During his young life, he belonged to a folk group called Men About Town. He was an avid golfer at The Northwood Club and was fortunate to attend the 2016 Ryder Cup. He also enjoyed hunting at the Donop Ranch in Llano, Texas, and was a die-hard sports fan of his SMU Mustangs and all of the Dallas professional sports franchises.
His business career was in the field of advertising, working at The Dallas Times Herald, James K. Wilson, as Senior Vice-President at Haggar Slacks, CR Anthony and Harper House.
During their marriage, Charles and Joan vacationed in Destin, Florida, every summer and spent many weekends at their Cedar Creek lakehouse. They also volunteered their time with the Northwood Women’s Club, Dallas Summer Musicals and Our Friend’s Place.
A special thank you is extended to Sunrise Senior Living where Charles lived the past three years. They took such great care of him and made him feel special and at home. His family is forever grateful for their love and care.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Emory Lee Martin and Rosine Maillot Martin, as well as his loving wife of 52 years, Joan Bower Martin.
