Carolyn was born January 7, 1932, in Shreveport, Louisiana, the youngest of three daughters of Kathleen Judkins Sutton and S.T. Sutton.
She graduated with Departmental Honors in English from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, where she was selected as the Outstanding Student in the School of Education.
Carolyn's teaching career began in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she met her future husband, First Lieutenant Donald Curtiss Owen. After obtaining a Texas Teaching Certificate at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and teaching one semester in San Antonio, she returned to Lake Charles. After their marriage in 1955, they moved to Dallas, Texas. She was a substitute teacher until the birth of their first child. Carolyn resumed her teaching career in 1967, after their younger child started school. In the city-wide shift of teachers for integration in 1970, she was transferred to Sequoyah Middle School, in West Dallas. Over her 29 year career in DISD, she worked at T.C. Marsh Jr. High, E.D. Walker Middle School, J.L. Long Middle School and she retired from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1994. She was the recipient of the Carolyn Owen Patio dedicated in 1980 by the faculty of J.L. Long Middle School.
As a member of American Association of University Women (AAUW), Carolyn was at one time active in the International Cuisine study group and also served as branch treasurer. She also enjoyed participating in the Classic Literature study group of the Richardson AAUW. She was a life member of the National Education Association. In 1988, she received her Master's Degree in English from Texas Woman's University. She is listed in Who's Who in Education, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who Among America's Teachers (nominated by former students).
In retirement, Carolyn enjoyed living next door to her daughter, baby-sitting the Moen grandchildren, traveling extensively, planting a beautiful flower garden of peonies, roses, poppies and phlox and sharing it all with her husband, until his death in 2003.
She is survived by her daughter Judith Kathleen Owen Moen and son-in-law John C. Moen of Dallas; son Kyle Curtiss Owen and daughter-in-law Helen (Lynn) Hammond Owen of Wichita Falls, Texas; grandchildren Matthew D. Moen, John P. Moen, Madeline K. (Katie) Moen, Whitney Owen Gregory, Ryan Gregory, Benjamin C. Owen, Daniela Owen and Christopher K. Owen.
Funeral Services will be at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 11122 Midway Rd., Dallas, TX ,75229, on Tuesday, June 20, at 11:00 a.m.
