CARTER, Betty “Bitsy” Ruth, 83, was born on January 8, 1940, and went home to Jesus on March 29, 2023. Born in Waco, Texas to Betty “Betsy” Thompson Ruth and Edmund Morton Ruth II, Bitsy grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she was a cheerleader at W.B. Ray High School. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she pledged Chi Omega Sorority and met the love of her life, Harold. Bitsy and Harold were married for almost 63 years. The Carter family lived in Austin, Wichita Falls, Ft. Worth, Golden (Colorado) and New Orleans (Louisiana) before settling in Dallas in 1970. Bitsy was very involved with the Chi Omegas, The Dallas Woman’s Club, The Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, Treasure Street Board, The Seekers Sunday School Class, Night OWLS and United Methodist Women’s Circle, AARPettes, Culture Club, Bridge/Lunch friends (all lunch, no bridge) and the Dallas Petroleum Landwives. She was a mainstay at her daughters’ schools from Elementary School through High School.
Friends and family will forever remember all the hilarious “Bitsyisms” and “Lucy/Ethyl” situations in which Bitsy constantly found herself a participant. No one can deny all the laughs, fun and joy she provided. Bitsy had the unique ability to laugh at herself harder and better than anyone else. She was an avid collector of hundreds (probably thousands) of owls, always increased by gifts from many dear friends.
Bitsy was an enthusiastic Longhorn fan and an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to everyone who knew her. She was a caring example of how to love the Lord and each other, never missing an opportunity to say, “I love you” or “I need a hug”. She leaves a hole in the hearts of those privileged enough to have had her in their lives.
Bitsy is survived by her loving husband, Harold Dee Carter, and their daughters/husbands, B.K. and Mark Sloan and Dee and Dodge Carter, all of Dallas. She is also survived by (all of Dallas): Grandchildren - Elizabeth Sloan (Jonathan Mentesana), Kaydee Sloan, J. Dodge Carter (Diane), Nicole Carter, and Mack Carter; Great Grandchildren - Elsie and Tripp Carter; Sister - Ann Cook (Arlyn) of Blanco, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the unbelievable care Bitsy received from her sweet caregivers, Mary, Silvia, Tonya, Linda, Erin and the VNA Hospice nurses/staff.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, April 12th at Highland Park United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at Northwood Club.
