Barbara was born on January 23, 1938, to James and Bonnie Spoonemore in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The family eventually moved to Dallas, Texas where she spent the most of her childhood with her beloved grandmother, Rosa Morris, in McKinney, Texas.
After graduating from McKinney High School in 1956, she began working as a secretary in Dallas. In her mid-twenties she met Charles E. Owens at the local movie theater and they wed in 1963, going on to have three daughters, Tina, Teresa and Tammy - later settling down in Mesquite, Texas, where they started their new life.
When their marriage ended in 1981, Barbara continued to raise her daughters with love and devotion. She went on to work for Fidelity and Deposit for almost 20 years before retiring in 1993. Throughout her retirement, she cherished spending time with her family, maintaining her home, dining out at her favorite restaurants, attending church with her daughters, watching her classic movies and playing bingo - always being careful not to go over her $20 budget.
In 2008, at the age of 70, Barbara was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. She faced the news with an unyielding spirit and unwavering faith. Despite more health issues to come, she persevered through it all without complaint. Shortly after her diagnosis, she began attending a local church and renewed her commitment to Christ. Later, she moved to Scurry, Texas to live with her daughter, Tina and her husband for the next seven years where they, along with her daughters Tammy and Teresa joyfully cared for her until her passing.
A scripture she learned from her grandmother that remained deep in her heart was John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” She was truly a special lady with a heart of gold, and will be deeply missed.
Barbara is survived by her brother James Spoonemore of Willis, Texas, her three daughters and their spouses, Tina Morgan and her husband Keith of Scurry, Texas, Teresa Cossabone and her husband Arthur of Waxahachie, Texas, and Tammy Owens of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Spoonemore, and sister Edna Ruth Beaupre.
She will be laid to rest on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Laurel Land Funeral Home & Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
