KERN, Barbara Armstrong was born July 28, 1932, in Montgomery, Alabama to Maybelle Watts Armstrong Cauthen and Daniel E. Armstrong and passed away January 4, 2018. Barbara, aka “Babo”, was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, confidant, and a friend – all accomplished with ease and grace. She influenced our lives with wisdom, kindness, strength and unconditional love. We will always remember her passion for living and the happiness she gave to all of us.
Barbara loved spending her summers in White Fish, MT and enjoyed playing golf nearly every day. She also was a great cook and entertainer and loved telling a good joke.

She attended University of Alabama, where she met her husband Joseph M. Kern. Barbara’s community and professional activities include being a member of Alpha Delta Pi, president of ADPi Alumnae Association, Christ the King Altar Society, Les Femmes Du Monde, Dallas Country Club Women’s Golf Association, Heritage Club, Greenway Parks Women’s Club, Dallas Woman’s Club, Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, and Dallas Council of World Affairs.
Barbara was preceded in death by her loving parents and husband Joseph M. Kern. She is survived by her daughters: Debbie Wheelock and husband Rob; Diana Kern and Carol Johnson; and Donna Kohler. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Laura Wheelock Saunders, Lisa Wheelock Barksdale and husband Ben, Lindsay Williams, Katie Freeman, C.J. Freeman and wife Lindsay, and her great-grandchildren Molly and Will Saunders, Blake and Macy Barksdale, and Harrison Freeman. Barbara is also survived by her brother W.A. “Butch” Cauthen and wife Carol, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Following a private interment at Calvary Hill Cemetery, a memorial Mass will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 10th.
