Arthur L. Sarris

Arthur Louis Sarris, M.D. passed away on January 3, 2017. He died surrounded by his family in the arms of those who loved him. Born May 7, 1929 in Antigo, Wisconsin, he was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Louis Sarris, and his brother, Charles Sarris.

Dr. Sarris graduated from Antigo High School in Antigo, Wisconsin. He then attended the University of Wisconsin, where he received his B.S. and M.D. degrees. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, Wisconsin, he went to the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston, Texas to complete his rotating internship. Upon completion of his internship, he then entered into the U.S. Army Medical Corp as a Captain. After completing a two year service, he went back to the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston, Texas and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery.

Upon completion of his orthopedic residency, he came to Dallas, Texas and entered into the private practice of orthopedic surgery, which he continued for 48 years. Initially, he was on the medical staffs of St. Paul, Baylor, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Mesquite Memorial Hospitals, but St. Paul Medical Center would eventually become his primary hospital and second home.

In 1984, the National Conference of Christians and Jews presented Dr. Sarris with the Brotherhood Award recognizing his outstanding leadership in promoting inclusion, acceptance, and good will through education and advocacy. In 2000, the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church recognized Dr. Sarris for his outstanding service to the Greek Orthodox Church by bestowing upon him the title of Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Dr. Sarris is survived by his wife Linda Foster Sarris, of 59 years, and two daughters—Maryann Mihalopoulos and Thalia Sarris Banowsky—who he loved very much and truly were his “life.” He also had six grandchildren who he loved and adored more than words can express: Alexandra Sarris Halbardier and her husband Ford, Arthur Tingay Brousseau, Meredith Foster Mihalopoulos, Cameron Sarris Banowsky, William Slater Banowsky III, and Thalia Claire Banowsky. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Frank Mihalopoulos, who he admired and loved as his own, and his sister Katherine Sarris Gregg from Wilmette, Illinois. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Meredith Sarris, his brother-in-law, Fred M. Foster, his wife, Marsha, and their family.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center, especially Dr. James Brugarolas, Dr. William Lee, Dr. Hugh McClung, and Dr. John Warner for all they do daily — not only for the family but the entire community.

The family also thanks Elsa Ponce, Lucy Remo, Sandra Rodriguez, and Virginia Quiroz for the love, support, and gentle care they provided to Dr. Sarris and his family.

The Trisagion Wake service for Dr. Arthur L. Sarris will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 7:00 pm and the funeral service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 1:00 pm. Both services will take place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church located at 13555 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, Texas 75240. A memorial reception will follow at the Arthur L. Sarris Community Center. Pallbearers are Cameron Banowsky, Will Banowsky, Arthur Brousseau, Angelo Chantilis Jr., Jason Foster, Ford Halbardier, Dimitri Morris, and Jimmy Vergos. Honorary Pallbearers are Stanley Boulas, Angelo Chantilis, Jimmy Gragg, Hugh McClung, M.D., and Arthur Nahatis.
