Tony was born in Asa, Texas, on January 9, 1932, to Crispin and Ramona (Ortiz) Herrera. He was one of eleven children. At the age of 17 Tony enlisted in the Army where he served in the Korean War from April 20, 1948 to April 21, 1952. In 1959 he met Gloria Madrid. They were married on October 29, 1960 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Waco, Texas. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this year. Tony was a loving husband, exceptional father and doting Tata (grandfather). He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity and sparkling sense of humor. Tony enjoyed playing golf and watching all sports. Tony’s family was his priority and he will forever be in our hearts.
Tony is preceded in death by his parents Crispin and Ramona (Ortiz) Herrera, his sisters Lucy Mejia, Nell Cheek, Lena Valverde, Bea Willis, Maria Martinez and Rachel Soto, his brothers Frank Herrera, Ralph Herrera, and Art Herrera. Surviving brother Al Herrera.
Left to cherish the memory of Tony are his devoted wife, Gloria Herrera, son James Herrera and Timothy Shaffer, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Julie Herrera and son Christopher Herrera (Mary Manthe). He is also survived by his adoring granddaughters Alyssa and Emma Herrera who were his pride and joy. Tony has many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Tony also enjoyed the many close compadres/friends he made over the years whom he considered family.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church on November 2, 2023 at 11:00 AM where he was a devoted member close to 60 years.
