I knew Mary Ann Webster through her work, along with her late husband Ron, maintaining hiking trails throughout the Santa Monica Mountains. They were very active leading volunteers through the Sierra Club and other organizations. For many decades they worked to lay out, build and repair these trails for the benefit of the public. Their selfless dedication helped countless nature lovers as well as curious city dwellers discover our beautiful mountains. We are all indebted to them for enriching our lives. Theirs is a legacy to be proud of. It was a privilege to have known them both.

I knew Mary Ann from working on trails with her and Ron. What they established nearly 50 years ago continues on with groups of volunteers gathering together each weekend to work on trails. This work takes on various forms: repairing what fire and rain has altered, trimming back brush that sees the trail as a place to expand and on occasion building new trail. Along the way, friendships are made, trail work techniques and knowledge of flora and fauna is passed along. We are the beneficiaries of this pioneering work in the Santa Monica Mountains and if we  take care,  future generations will also be beneficiaries.  That is quite the legacy!
