Thomas Gibson Yarbrough of Sumerduck, VA passed away at home on February 1, 2022, at the age of 87. He was the son of Geneva Parham and Lucien Bell Yarbrough and was born in Nashville, Tennessee on May 6, 1934. Tom was a 1952 graduate of Fairfax High School in Fairfax, VA. He attended Emory and Henry College graduating in 1956 and went on to receive his degree in Dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia in 1963.
In the early years, Tom was employed by Allied Chemical, the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, and as a science teacher and coach in West Virginia. After receiving his degree in Dentistry, he practiced in Hartsville, SC, McLean and Gainesville, VA. Tom’s dental career spanned 33 years.
During his high school years, Tom participated in 4-H, FFA, the Varsity Club, Science club and Student Government. In college, he was the president of the Beta Zeta Fraternity and played varsity football and basketball. Tom remained active in his community with leadership positions in the Jaycees, Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Ruritan Club, Little League Baseball, Youth Soccer Association, and the National Capital Soccer League. Tom was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Brandy Station, VA.
Tom enjoyed numerous hobbies including sports, hunting, fishing, photography, golf, gardening, travel, hiking, and training bird dogs. He particularly loved fly fishing and learned to tie his own flies during retirement.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, wife, Fay Wynn Yarbrough, sisters Lucy Yarbrough Haynes, Geneva Yarbrough, brother, Lucien Bell Yarbrough, daughter, Carey Hall-Warner, and son, Thomas Gibson Yarbrough, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Cullum Yarbrough, daughter, Suzanne Yarbrough Bowman, sons, Wynn William Yarbrough, Walter Cullum Yarbrough, and Christopher Lucien Yarbrough. Tom is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
The family will gather for a private service to be held in the future.
