Doris Inskeep, 88, of Culpeper, VA. went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Doris was born July 26, 1930 to Frank and Florence Rollins. Doris was preceded in death by her two husbands, David E. "Shorty" Downs formerly of Warrenton, and Harold J. Inskeep formerly of Culpeper. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Florence Rollins, a brother Frank Rollins, three sisters Claire Eldridge, Anna Mae Martin, and Mary Koenig; three half sisters: Grace Mastalerz, Mary Atchison, and Louise Sutphen.
Surviving her are her three sons, David Earl Downs (Jr.) of Buena Vista , Kenneth Franklin Downs of Culpeper, and Ronald Walter Downs of Radford. Also she is survived by 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Rollins and Eddie Rollins, 3 sisters, Gertie Graves, Charlotte Dameron, and Barbara Justice; a sister-in-law Jean Inskeep, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris enjoyed several careers during her working years, from "number please" telephone operator, to Western Union operator, to her most lengthy career with the Warrenton Training Center. She was an avid reader, and loved taking care of her home, yard and flowers. She frequently took her green thumb on the road to help her family with planting and pruning. After her retirement she enjoyed her golf outings with "the ladies", and the days she was able to volunteer in the coffee shop at Culpeper Hospital. In her later years, she enjoyed the company of friends and neighbors at The Culpeper, known affectionately to her as the "Baptist Home".
The family would like to thank all who participated in her care, especially in her last years. The administration and staff of The Culpeper were a second family to her, and met all her needs with professional courtesy and loving family care. Words can't express our thanks for the support they gave us during her time there. Special thanks too to Hospice of the Piedmont for their loving care.
There is no visitation scheduled, and a graveside service for family and close friends will be held at a later date in the Culpeper National Cemetery. The date, when arranged, will be posted on this site. In lieu of flowers, it was Doris' hope that any memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 615 Slaters Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22313; the Culpeper Food Closet, P. O. Box 343, Culpeper, Virginia 22701; or the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911.
