Kenneth A. Carter, 87, of Mt. Prospect, passed away March 27, 2024. He was born May 26, 1936 in Grafton, WI to Roy and Laura (Hill) Carter.
Ken and Sue met at UW-LaCrosse and have been married for 62 years.
Ken spent most of his teaching and coaching career at John Hersey High School in Arlington Hts. He started there in 1969 when the school opened and retired in 1994. The last twenty years at Hersey he was the athletic director. Ken’s dedication to Hersey sports was practically unparalleled during that time. Ken retired with his wife in 1994 and they have enjoyed the last 30 years splitting time between their homes in Mt Prospect and Sun City Arizona.
Ken loved sports. He mostly enjoyed cheering on the Green Bay Packers and UW-Madison Badgers. He also loved a great game of golf and after he retired he got to golf every single day all year round for many years.
In December of 1997, Hersey High School dedicated the gym in his honor and it has since been called Ken Carter Gymnasium. He always stressed the importance of education and always believed that coaches were important teachers. He ended his acceptance speech with , “When this place is no longer a classroom, take my name down”.
Ken will be dearly missed by his family, including his wife: Suzanne Carter; children: Jeanne Bambini (Lou), Doug Carter (Karen); grandchildren: Nick Bambini (Vanessa), Kelly Wille (Steve), Kenny Bambini (Julia), Aimee Varela (Joseph), Stephanie Arteaga (Arturo); great grandchildren: Charlee, Emma and Ben Wille, Joseph, Cameron and Olivia Varela, Marcus and Mateo Arteaga; and his brother, Orv (Deanna) Carter.
Celebration of life will be private.
