Robert was born January 27, 1932 in East Chicago, IN to the late Henry Thomas and Mary Katherine (Springs) Matthews. Two sisters also preceded in death.
On November 24, 1955 he married Janet (Baron) Matthews, she survives in Valparaiso. Also surviving are his daughters Debora Matthew, Dianna (Richard) Springer, Virginia (Dale) Conger, Sharlene (Scott) Gilliana, and Cindy (Henry) Setser. Also his grandchildren, Vincen, Adam, Ariell, Matthew, Kevin, Jannel, Justin, Angela, Michaelene, Thimas, Jack, and 6 great grandchildren.
After graduating Hammond Tech he then entered the United States Army. When returning home he became a steel worker and millwright for Bethleham Steel. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of service. Bob was a charter member of Bethleham Employees Federal Credit Union (now, Allegius Credit Union) which was established in 1966. He held many positions in this 35 year commitment to volunteering which included the Supervisory, Credit and Building Committees along with the Board of Directors which he spent many years as President. Bob received the volunteer Achievemnet Award from the Indiana Credit Union League in 1995. Even after retirement from the mill Bob remained an active volunteer. He was also an active participant in the Northwest Indiana Credit Union Chapter. Bob believed the credit union philosophy of People Helping People. He was a friend to everybody and a remarkable father towards his daughters and son-in-laws.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 15, at 12:00 pm with Rev. Craig Forwalter officiating at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (8178 S. Cline Ave.; Schererville, IN 46375). Visitation will be Friday, March 14 from 4-8 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. Private family burial will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
