Nancy Beer Johnson, a vibrant and loving soul, of Croton-on-Hudson, New York, passed away on December 5, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on January 12, 1943 and raised in Riverdale, Bronx, Nancy lived a full life, filled with joy, passion, and an unwavering love for her family, friends and the world around her.
Nancy was married to Thomas A. Johnson, her cherished husband of 57 years, and lifelong ski, tennis, travel and Scrabble partner. She leaves behind her two beloved sons, Alexander and Gregory, and their wives Stacey and Kelly. She was the proud grandmother of Elizabeth and Thomas, whose lives she touched with warmth and wisdom, and endless games of checkers. She also leaves behind her cherished cousins, Karin Gerstel and Wendy Gerstel, who were close companions throughout her life, along with their spouses, Joe Woodard and Tom Badger, with whom she also shared a close relationship, and the extended Johnson family, with whom, for decades, she celebrated the annual family reunion in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Nancy’s spirit was marked by her outgoing nature, joyful presence, and loving heart. She cherished each day, finding fulfillment in the simple pleasures of life. Whether she was swimming in the waters of Roaring Brook Lake, Singing Brook Farm or on Cape Cod, immersed in the pages of a beloved Jane Austen novel or a historical account of the British monarchy, or sharing stories with her friends and family, Nancy’s energy and positivity radiated wherever she went.
Nancy was a lifelong learner and a gifted writer. After graduating New York University, she became a writer for The New York Times and Better Homes and Gardens. She later worked as a Licensed Real Estate Broker, showcasing her business acumen and drive. Her love for literature and the written word led her to pursue a Master’s degree in British Literature and a career as an adjunct professor at Pace University and Marymount College, where she inspired students with her insight and passion for learning.
A regular reader of The New York Times, Nancy maintained an insatiable curiosity about the world and its happenings. Her enthusiasm for reading and sharing knowledge never waned, and she continued to be a source of inspiration for her family, friends, and students.
Most of all, she loved being a wife and a mother.
Nancy’s memory will live on through her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched. Her legacy of love, joy, and passion for life will be deeply missed, but her spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
A visitation and service for Nancy will be held on Saturday, December 14. The visitation will be from 10:00 AM -11:30 AM at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., in Croton.
