It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert C. Doran of Croton-on-Hudson on May 15, 2021 at the age of 90. Like all things in his life, he faced his illness with great grace, strength and courage and he will be deeply missed.
Herb was born in Croton to John and Virginia Doran and was the older brother to Malcolm and Jack. As a teen at Croton Harmon High School, he fell in love with sports and became a standout basketball player. As a young man, he loved to bowl and sing in the church choir. He joined the Carpenter’s Union and soon became a master drywaller, eventually becoming a partner in Ran-Mont Construction. He moved to Briarcliff Manor where he continued in his drywall business and also began to build custom homes. He joined the Briarcliff Zoning Board and was a member of the Builders Institute for many years.
He eventually returned to Croton and spent his time enjoying the town he grew up in and making lasting memories with friends and family. He was a kind, quiet and generous man who loved to read, watch the Yankees and Knicks, travelling with his brothers and their families and collecting antiques. He loved animals and thoroughly enjoyed when his daughter’s dogs came to visit at their “country” home.
Herb leaves behind his beloved daughter Denise Stella and son Barnard “Butch” (Linda) Doran and his cherished granddaughter Alana Doran. He is also survived by his dear brother Malcolm, half-sister Sherry Garcia, and his nephew and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother Jack.
A special thank-you to Jenny and Ana who provided great care and compassion to Herb, both long and short term, for which we will always be most grateful. We would also like to thank the Croton Police Department and the Croton EMS for their on-going kind, compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, you may send a contribution in Herb’s memory to the Croton EMS at 44 Wayne Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520. Private Services will be handled by Edward Carter Funeral Home.
