David Arthur Glazier, a resident of Ossining, NY, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024. He was 89 years old. David was born on February 10, 1935, in Worcester, Massachusetts to Zalman (“Jimmy”) and Minnie (Silverman) Glazier. David spent his childhood in Lowell, Massachusetts where he was doted on by his grandmother, Bessie, and played in every youth sports league that would have him. Despite growing up in relative poverty, David was a tenacious student and eventually earned a place to study literature at Harvard University. Upon graduation he served in the United States Army from 1957-1959 where he was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. After his discharge, David spent a year driving through Europe and later living and working at Kibbutz outside Haifa.
David returned to the US in the mid-sixties and settled in New York City where his primary mode of travel was Yamaha motorcycle that he parked in the middle of his ground floor apartment on Cornelia Street. He met and married Ann (Watkins) Glazier in 1968, who convinced him to give up the motorcycle and move to Westchester where their son, Jefferey Michael Glazier, was born in 1973. David would later say that he spent this time drinking himself out of a very promising career in publishing.
By the late seventies, he and Ann had divorced, and David had begun the long journey of getting sober and rebuilding his life. He devoted the rest of his life to recovery, both his own and others, going so far as to return to school to get his social work degree in his 50s. David focused most of his work as a therapist on working with people experiencing issues related to mental illness and addiction.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen Forster Glazier, his daughter, Janet Emily Glazier, his son-in-law Alex Kondo, and his grandchildren, Aya and Ollie Kondo. He is also survived by his niece and nephew, Erica and Henry Peter Sack, his ex-wife and lifelong friend, Ann Glazier, as well as the entirety of his “adopted” family, the Cohen-Occhipinti-Dyckmans.
He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Glazier, his sister, Naomi Sack, his brother, Arthur Glazier, his cousin, Dr. David Freeman, his nephew, Andrew Sack, and his sponsor and close friend, George Allen.
A celebration of his life is scheduled on Monday, October 14th from 12-4 pm, where a funeral service is scheduled at 1pm, followed by military honors at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his honor to the Ossining Food Pantry, GMHC, or the Trevor Project
