Amleto “Mel” Giarolo, 88, of Croton, NY passed away after a long hard fought battle with Alzheimer's Disease and Renal cancer, with loved ones by his side on Saturday April 21, 2023. Mel was born to Leone and Chiara (Tumba) Giarolo on October 18, 1934 in Tarrytown NY.
Mel’s passion was the game of baseball. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Mel played for the Lexington Indians, an Independent minor league baseball team in the Western Carolina League. In 1960, he finished the season with a .307 BA and an impressive .455 On Base Percentage. While playing ball in North Carolina Mel met his wife Brenda Owens. After his Minor League career was over, Mel attended Ithaca College under the GI Bill where he earned a degree in teaching.
Mel spent most of his career teaching Physical Education in the Lakeland School District. His love of baseball extended to a career coaching varsity baseball at Croton Harmon High School, where his team won the New York State Championship in 1981. Coach Giarolo had a special relationship with his players, many of whom, he would remain close friends for the rest of his life.
Aside from baseball, Mel loved to travel and spending time with his friends and family. A lifelong resident of Croton, Mel was a common fixture around town and could be seen anywhere from fishing on the river to getting a coffee and newspaper at any of Croton’s stores and deli’s.
Mel is survived by his fiancé, Connie Corry, his sister, Amelia “May” Capitanio of Arizona, his loving children; Christopher (Maureen) Giarolo, of Orlando Fl, Jill (Sean) Bleakley of Buchanan NY, John Giarolo of Bedford Hills NY, grandchildren Francesca Giarolo, Aaron Birbrower, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Brenda and his brother Victor Giarolo.
A Visitation for Mel will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Holy Name of Mary Church, 114 Grand Street, Croton-on-Hudson, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 29, 2023 also at Holy Name of Mary Church.
