Neil is survived by his sons Neil Harper Jr. (Kim), Scott Harper (Annette), daughters Tamra Smith (Marty) and Julie Nelson (Mark), his brother Norman C. Harper (Suzanne), several nieces and nephews, sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years Marvelean, father John Harper, mother Mamie Harper, son Jerry Neil Harper, daughter Cathy Moss, and daughter-in-law Sandy Harper.
Neil was born in South Charleston, West Virginia on October 25, 1930. He shared his love of bluegrass music in Saturday night jam sessions, music festivals, and playing in a band, The Smokey Mountain Boys. He played several musical instruments and was passionate about teaching his children to play. After retiring from driving an eighteen-wheeler for 23 years, he enjoyed driving a tour bus until the age of 85. His other big love was woodworking in which he crafted and sold several items at Tamarack and area fairs. Additionally, he was an avid reader stating he traveled all around the world through the many books he read. He will be laid to rest with his pet, Smokey and will be immensely missed by all who loved him.
Celebration of Neil’s life will be 2:00 p.m. August 19, 2023 at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home with Pastor Leslie M. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
