She was born in 1940, the daughter of Marcella and Luster McGrew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Hokey Young; siblings Ray McGrew and Faye Wells.
Helen was a graduate of Union District/Dunbar High School and a lifelong resident of Dunbar. She was employed for 45 years as a secretary for Communication Workers of America retiring at the age of 65.
Helen was an adoring wife, mother, and grandmother who poured her heart and soul into loving her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was an exceptional baker who enjoyed cooking for her family who always looked forward to her homemade spaghetti and famous pumpkins rolls.
She is survived by her only son, H.F., and wife Penny; grandson, Austin; and granddaughter, Aubrey, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own.
We wish to thank the many friends who called, visited, and prayed with us during her sickness. Special thanks to the caring staff at Hubbard Hospice House West and the wonderful ICU nurses at WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital. We would also like to send our special thanks to Kenneth and Karen Wells and Jeff and Regan Wells. Our hearts are forever thankful for Julie Sayre for her many bedside visits and Heather
Price Bowles for her care, comfort, and wisdom during Helen’s final earthly moments.
Honoring Helen’s wishes, a private service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hubbard Hospice House West, 4605 MacCorkle Avenue S.W., South Charleston, West Virginia, 25309.
