Champ Louis Vinet passed away at Richard Murphy Hospice in Hammond, LA on September 23, 2022 at age 100. He was born June 23, 1922 to the late Leonidas Paul Vinet and the late Nellie Julia Sbisa. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, he was also a former resident of Metairie and Mandeville, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ira Mae “Potsy” Potts Vinet, and his brother Robert Vinet.
Survived by his son Martin Vinet (Lynette), son Albert Vinet (Kathy), and daughter Vivian Whorton (Jerry). Also survived by grandchildren: Jason Vinet (Amy), Jared Vinet (Danielle), Amy Vinet Weber, Amanda Vinet Fabre (Jason), and Aaron Vinet (Katelyn); step-grandchildren Nikki Whorton Hankins and Natalie Whorton; 14 great-grandchildren: Marley, Dominick, and Molly Vinet; Amelia and Charlotte Vinet; Madison, Owen, Lily, and Ashtyn Weber; Max Blouin and Winston Fabre; Wyatt, Leland and Clare Vinet; 5 step-great-grandchildren; and special family friend Jody Millbern Vinet Brown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Champ was a graduate of Warren Easton High School, Class of 1940. During World War II, he belonged to the Army Air Forces 15th Army Air Forces Division. He was a pilot on the B-24 Liberator and completed 25 missions. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1982. He was the Manager of the Louisiana Department of Labor and retired in 1982. He also served as past President of the Pontchartrain Shores Civic Association and past member of the VFW Metairie Post 01642. In 2018, Champ began volunteering at the World War II Museum in New Orleans; he would tell visitors about his experiences during the War and continued to do so until early 2020.
Friends and Family are invited to attend funeral services on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at Grace Funeral Home, 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, LA 70433. Visitation will be held beginning at 11:00 AM until service time.
Champ will be laid to rest at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 34888 Grantham College Drive, Slidell, Louisiana on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 10:00 AM.
