Ronald Frank Chapman

He was predeceased by his parents, Margret Potter and Frank Chapman, as well as his older sister Maureen and his younger brother Robert. Ron is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Verna, his sons Michael (Joleen), Kevin, Darren, and his step son Daniel, his grandchildren Kalliese (Tanner) and Kaleob (Hailee), his niece Laurie (Scott), his nephew Bruce (Audrey) and great nieces and nephews, as well as many extended family all over the island.

Ron was born in North Vancouver, where he lived until he was 3 yrs old, when his family moved to Vancouver Island and built their family home in Union Bay, where he grew up.

Ron had many hobbies such as fishing, hunting, biking up the mountain, and collecting sports memorabilia and toys.

Before meeting his lifelong companion, Ron had 2 sons Kevin and Darren in 1967 and 1971.

In 1974 Ron met his wife Verna and they began the rest of his life together. A year later they welcomed their son Michael in 1975.

Ron spent many of his years employed and working in the logging industry, as a chokerman. He worked all over the North Island for many companies such as; Crown Zelarback/Crown Forest, Gold River Logging and Woss Logging.

When Ron was not working he could be found on the sidelines of every sporting event that his son Michael played in, and later on when his grandchildren started playing sports and dancing/singing he was right there as well cheering them all on and letting them all know how proud he was of them.

In 2019 Ron was diagnosed with stage 4 renal failure and so began his long battle with his health. Ron spent over 3 years doing 3 trips a week to Nanaimo General Hospital to have dialysis done by the amazing Renal team and his amazing Dr Lamb (Nephrologist). Ron’s GP Dr Galik as well was so kind and caring to help him and his family navigate through his many struggles through his kidney disease. Unfortunately in the summer of 2022 Ron was diagnosed with vascular dementia which was eventually what took Ron from his family. In his last few days the nurses from Home Support/Palliative care were so helpful in making sure that he was comfortable and taken care of, so that the family would be able to just spend his last moments without any worries.

Thank you from the entire Chapman family to all of the Medical, Nursing and Support staff throughout the years that helped along the way to care for papa.

In Papa’s last few days of life he spent it in his home, surrounded by his wife Verna, son Michael and many family members reminiscing about the great life he lived. Ron passed peacefully in the later afternoon of November 2, 2022 and he will be forever remembered as the world’s best father and Papa!

A celebration of life will be held November 19, 2022 at the Lower Native Sons Hall (located at 360 Cliffe Ave, in Courtenay next to the Sid Williams Theatre) between 1:00pm & 4:00pm.
