Neil was born May 13, 1945 in Port Alberni BC. Attended Port Alberni High School, went on to Malispina Trade school for Heavy Duty Mechanic.
Neil started his career working in a Saw Mill in Port Alberni while he completed his Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification. He worked in many locations over the years along the coast in places such as Teakerne Arm, Lund, Haida-Gwaii, and Kelsey Bay. He retired in 1998 from the industry after working for 33 years.
Neil (Jay Hawker) met his wife to be Darlene (Bare Foot Contessa) attending CB radio dances and campouts.
From 1986-1991, he and his loving wife enjoyed showing their dogs, (West-highland White Terriers), in obedience and confirmation competitions all over the Mainland and Vancouver Island.
They enjoyed trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Nashville Tennessee.
After retiring they relocated to Campbell River in 1995, where he started part-time employment with Overwaitea Foods, and Kelly Transport. They also enjoyed golfing, walking dogs, gardening, playing slow-pitch, dancing, playing darts, cards and camping. Neil also enjoyed fishing and was an avid hunter for most of his life. They adopted a new fur baby “Kelsey” after losing their last Westie.
In 2002 they relocated once again to Courtenay, BC where Neil started working as a delivery person for the Record, and Echo newspapers. He also delivered the newsletter for Crown Isle once a month. He received accolades in the “Bouquets” section regularly in the Record newspaper from customers he delivered too. After losing Kelsey they purchased a Silky Terrier (Sasha). It was one of their main joys in life having dogs. Neil enjoyed volunteering at the seniors centre for Friday night dances, and morning in kitchen at the Evergreen seniors centre.
