Diagnosed with lymphoma in 2018, Jan faced her illness with remarkable strength and resilience, exploring numerous treatments for this incurable disease. She did not fight alone. Her oncology team with BC Cancer Care in Victoria and her medical team in Courtenay treated her with kindness, consideration and professionalism.
Jan brought her beautiful, independent and assured energy to share with us in this lifetime. And she lived her life by the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Her honesty, kindness and ability to see the goodness in others touched the lives of everyone she met. And everyone who knew Jan knew she could be trusted.
A graduate of Algonquin College, Jan earned her diploma in data processing and established a successful career in her early 20s. She dedicated 34 years to the oil and gas software support industry in Calgary, where she worked at CGI, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues and clients. After she retired from her job in Calgary she moved to Courtenay to be closer to her family. She devoted time to caring for her parents, helping them to remain in their home as long as possible.
Jan was surrounded by friends and family who truly cared for her. Her great smile and laugh and her love and generosity will never be forgotten. She herself was a truly important and meaningful gift to so many. Jan knew that family isn’t always blood, it’s the people you want in your life - and she was wanted and appreciated in the lives of many.
Her involvement with the Comox Valley Newcomers' Club and the special bond she formed with her group of friends, Jan’s Amigos, highlights the importance of community and support, especially during challenging times. It's clear that she brought joy and laughter to those around her, and her loving nature will be deeply missed.
Jan’s family members, close friends and cousins live all over the country and she stayed in touch with so many. She enjoyed her visits, road trips and vacations with them. She loved them and their company. And she attended as many birthdays, weddings and anniversaries as she could.
Jan's legacy of kindness, strength, and dedication to family and friends will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
It was her wish any donations made in her memory go to BC Cancer or Lymphoma Canada.
Jan is survived by her mother, Helen (Redden) Adie, and predeceased by her father, James (Jim) Adie. She will be fondly remembered by her siblings Jocelyn Newton, Peter (Lila), Carol Gibson, Mike, and Robby, and her niece Lia Newton (Steve Graham), nephews James Newton, Brett Gibson (Jenn) and Ryan Gibson.
A sunset ceremony on the beach of the Ottawa River was held by her Ottawa family members on October 7th. A gathering to celebrate Jan’s life in the Comox Valley will be planned for a future date.
