Betty was born on March 6, 1920 in Chicago to Josephine and Sidney Byersdorf. She was a child of the Depression and came of age during the Roosevelt era. Her admiration for Roosevelt had a lasting influence on her political views. At the age of 95 she was keenly aware of the cur-rent political landscape and more than willing to let you know about it.
She spent most of her life living in her beloved city of Chicago and developed a bond with the city that was evident to those who knew her. She attended Lake View High School in Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University where she earned a degree in Sociology. Betty loved working with and teaching children. As a young women, she and her sister Ruth Cohn organized and ran a summer day camp program. Later, she earned a teaching certificate and worked for many years as a teacher and director of an early child education program at a Jew-ish Community Center in Chicago. During her many years in Chicago she volunteered at sev-eral charitable organizations and was an active member of the Emanuel Congregation. After her retirement, she continued teaching as a volunteer docent at the Lincoln Park Zoo.
Betty married Bernard A Rubin on March 7, 1943 while he was on active duty serving in the Na-vy during WW2. They had many wonderful years together and often traveled far and wide. Lovers of the arts, they enjoyed many years of a lifelong membership to the Art Institute of Chi-cago. Mr. Rubin, who was a Certified Public Accountant and also a life-long Chicagoan, passed away in 1991.
In her later life, Betty moved to Laguna Woods, California, where she continued active participa-tion in many organizations. She would frequently strike up conversations, and make friends wherever she went. She truly loved entertaining and engaging in conversation with her many friends and family. She especially enjoyed her participation in the Laguna Woods Clown organ-ization, which brought humor and entertainment to people in need. As a life long reader, she was also active in a number of book clubs in Laguna Woods. She loved bridge, and often played online internationally on her ipad.
Betty is survived by her daughter Nancy Sanborn and son-in-law Ted Sanborn of Los Angeles, son Richard Rubin and daughter-in-law Kathy Rubin of Amherst, Massachusetts, and her grandchildren, Rebecca Sanborn and her husband Mauricio Van Heusden, Allison Cobar and her husband Larry Cobar, Aaron Rubin and his wife Julia Hallman, Elizabeth Rubin, and three great-grand daughters, Tessa and Alina Van Heusden and Chloe Cobar.
She will be missed by her friends in Chicago and Laguna Woods. Donations in her memory may be made to The Foundation of Laguna Woods Village.
