I am yet another English student of Joyce's.  All these years later, there is not a day that goes by that I (an "escaped" band director, organist, and semi-retired music ed. professor)  do not make use of the skills and thinking about writing, grammar, literature and spelling (yes, she got all of those in!) she taught. Moreover, due to Mr. Singer's retirement, I had her for both 10th and 12th grade--perhaps the only graduating class to do so. Everything said on these pages by her students is true; as a student--and even as I returned to RV to do some long term subbing--I only saw her have to "lower the boom" a few times as she had a motherly, persuasive way that could charm late work out of the most lazy student. As I taught public school music, I also acquired a 1-8 elementary certificate through the ODE retraining process, and thus actually taught gr. 7 English in a small school district--freaking out the English dept head there because I'd tested out of all my English at Capital U. because I would write a coherent essay and never had an English course in college. I could do that because Joyce Stocker was a structural grammarian who had us spelling words from the literature book glossary and diagramming sentences the week before we graduated!  . . . not to mention laughing our heads off over the three "Jacques" in "Tale of Two Cities."  Some years after I graduated, people were still saying "Hey Mrs. Stocker passed your old Sr. research paper around class the other day."  (That was the paper about legato technique in trombone playing . . . with one word, "embouchure," consistently spelled wrong throughout! I was floored when she showed me that paper!) At her services today, I was reminded of the need to aspire to do our best and to get our students to follow suite.  Certainly you have to know the subject--but you also have to be a salesperson for learning widely and deeply.  " So live that when thy summons comes to join that innumerable caravan . . . "  Ed D. She was my  English teacher at River view  High School. She was such an awesome teacher and a sweet teacher and lady.The only think that I did not like is the book reports.I was not one to get up in front of people,we need to stand in front of the class. But she was one of my favorite teacher.

Mrs. Stocker was an amazing teacher!  I had the honor of being in her College English class at RVHS.  She certainly did have a twinkle in her eye and obviously loved teaching.  She always went above and beyond and deeply touched a number of us.  She will be missed but not forgotten.  Love, hugs, and condolences to her family and friends.


Mrs. Stocker is one of my most memorable and favorite HS teachers. I always felt I learned more English history in her 12th grade English class. She made it so interesting. I can still see her perched up on her stool in front of the class, rubbing her hands together and giggling with a twinkle in her eye, as she described some juicy detail about some ancient figure. May you be comforted in your time of loss. Class of 1994.

I graduated from River View in 1970 and so enjoyed taking my senior College English class with Mrs. Stocker.  She always had a pep in her step and thoroughly enjoyed teaching.  I am still teaching today (over 40 years) and was excited to teach because of her and others  of my former caring high school teachers.

She was one of my favorite teachers of all time.  She was so full of excitement in what her students were involved with.  She made you feel you were part of the teaching/learning process in her class.  The best grades I ever got in high school English.  God bless you Ms. Stocker.  Class of '76.

Mrs. Stocker was an inspiration to her students! She inspired and encouraged me to become a writer/journalist which has been a fantastic career for me. She always knew how to bring out the best in her students. I had her my senior year when my parents divorced. She helped me through many difficult days, and she was compassionate, a great listener and always offered the best advice. I will be forever grateful to have had her as a teacher and friend.

Your Mom was 1 in a million!  We all loved her so much, not only as a teacher, but as a dear friend!  I was blessed to have her twice, both Sophomore & Senior year.  We talked many times over the last 40+ years.

Mrs. Stocker was a great Teacher and a wonderful person. Her presence on this earth made the lives of those who knew her better for having known her. As my senior English teacher she never failed to make learning engaging and fun. She also found ways to make each student feel like they were important. The world has lost a true gem of a human being. Vaya con Dios Mrs. Stocker. My condolences to the family.

Joyce Stocker was by far the best teacher and human being I have ever known.   She was not only a brilliant teacher.  She was the kindest,  compassionate person I have ever met.   I have remembered her fondly over the years.  Thank you, Mrs. Stocker.  Class of 1972.

Mrs. Stocker had a twinkly smile that made me feel that her class was going to the highlight of the day, and it always was.  She gave out compliments and encouragement on a daily basis.  After many years and many experiences,  Mrs. Stocker is one of the best memories I have.    Thank you for giving students  49 years of your precious life.

Mrs. Stocker was exactly what every child needs throughout their school years, a passionate human who loved what she did and even more than this adored each and every student. She chaperoned our Mexico trip for Spanish class and was a riot in Cancun, so many fond memories of this beautiful lady! Rest easy Mrs. Stocker! 

Joyce was a one of a kind type of teacher who was loved by her students.  She was a well respected colleague, my friend, and "partner in crime" traveling companion on our school trips to France and other countries.  She was a common sense teacher and person.  Not only did she share life experiences and her teaching with her students, but we all learned from her. Joyce, you will be missed dearly.  I am truly saddened about your passing and send my condolences to your family.  Thank you for all the wonderful memories.

A true teacher in every sense of the word!  She always encouraged me to be myself, no matter how much it interrupted class!

I am so saddened to hear of Mrs. Stocker's passing. She was one of my high school English teachers at River View High School.  She was my favorite teacher. Mrs. Stocker was kind, thoughtful, funny and intuitive. Heaven has gained an angel.
