I owe my love of church songs to Ama.  She taught me the song, "Benito, Bendito" as she sang it to me when I was four years old.
 When I became very ill at eight years old she laid next to me so that her body heat would keep me warm when blankets were not enough.  Ama was there at the drop of a hat anytime her help was needed.  I am forever grateful for my wonderful Mother.  Ama always gave all of herself. I LOVE YOU AMA!....Joann

ama, i got your message, it took me a couple of days to figure it out. I want you to know that I will always remember that you loved me and always will...and when I go about my life I think of you everyday.  I drive to work and I think of you, I drive back home and think of you. :)...And Halloween morning was hard...that was the last time I heard your voice :( So hard I didnt call Isaac for his birthday (Sorry Isaac)...Ama I love you and I miss you.  When I cry I can hear you say "No LLoras Bel" :) The memory of your hands rubbing my back always comforts me.  I know you are always with me. I need to learn how to make atole! You told me once but I never tried cuz I wanted that to be just something you made for me, if I made it , it wouldnt be special anymore :) Love you, Bel

For those who are too young to remember or are yet to be born, I want to share a little about Ama. She was:  A firm believer in God, strong, wise, funny, loving, giving, compassionateâ€¦ a nurturing mother, good person with a tender heart, she was, however, the disciplinarian she needed to be, which I, personally am grateful for.  
   She was an emotional person, seldom allowing her feelings to surface though.  I remember her crying when her parents would leave to west Texas, she tried to keep it from us but we could sense her sadness.   She was a good wife, a sweet and caring grandmother and great grandmother; she was one of the favored aunts, and a dependable friend.  When commuting to school in Kingsville she not only fixed breakfast for me, but my friends as well (and to their liking at that).  She would do the same for Patricia and her friends.  Even when I moved away to boarding school,(just kidding) to school, she fixed my clothes, washed, ironed and matched on hangers ready for the week, every week.  We could all depend on her to go that extra mile. Our home was always clean and fresh, clothing crisp and ready to the nines for all of us!  She had an answer to all our questions; if we were looking for something that we thought was lost; she always knew where to find it.  If an appliance was broken she could fix it, and if our heart was broken she knew just the right words to make it better.  She would sit by our bedside all night when we were sick reassuring us that she wasn't going to let anything happen to us.  She would come to do the same when her grandchildren were ill.  Her needs always came last, sick or tired as she might have been, she never let up.   She prayed for people she knew and even for those she'd never met, if she heard of their illness, she would ask for their name and place it in her Bible.  The Rosary's words were her last every night.  Early on she listened and sang along to the radio as she did her house work, in the later years she finally had time for a novela or two (made sure to turn it off if company dropped by).  She worked long and hard all her life, from growing up with her parents, working in the fields in all types of weather, to odd jobs, to parenting and the never ending job of housewife. She took pride in everything she did and God knows she did it well.  Ama, a beautiful woman loved the holidays, liked enchiladas, road trips, she carried herself well, dressing up or down, she was skillful and smart, she was thoughtful and neighborly.  She loved her pets and they loved her.  She enjoyed birthdays, including her own, Mexican movies and early morning coffee.  Everyone that came to know her loved her.
I miss my Mom (con ancias) and look forward to the day that I can see her again!!

Dear Ama, I hope you are doing good in Heaven.  It's going good for me.  Guess what?  My birthday is tomorrow. I will be 11 years old.  I'm still an 'A' honor roll student, which is amazing!  Fifth grade is cool and the teachers are nice.  We do alot of work but it is easy. Remember, I love you.

Mother, I can't believe it's been a whole year since I last saw you.  Remember how I used to always beg for your affection, asking you to rub my back or play with my hair?   I was so needy and every time you complied,  I think I actually purred....I remember wishing you'd never  stop.  ha ha.  I miss you so much but please know  I am ok.  I know you are in paradise, free from pain, waiting until we meet again. I will never forget our last hug, A hug that this time was requested by you. That hug means the world to me and I will forever cherish it.  Thank you Mom!  I will always love you and forever be grateful for EVERYTHING you ever did for me. Oh and please know Rosalinda and I attempted to make stuffing for my work.........we could have really used your advice....lol.  It worked out ok after Lydia jumped in to help.  Lydia said I could have become a really good cook like you if only I had listened instead of dancing around during the lessons.  Look at the bright side, I'm a really good dancer now.     Please know  that I miss your face, your smell, your advice, your friendship, your presence, your touch, your love, your sense of humor and most of all our private little jokes.... Mom I forgot to tell you , you look so beautiful in the dress you mentally instructed me to get for you that Sunday morning before you passed on little did I know that was the dress you wore to Sondra's wedding 15 yrs before you looked like the perfect angel !!     Dad love the way you looked !!

Mom what can I tell you that u don't already know, this past year with out you has been rough . If it weren't for my children and grandchildren I don't know what would become of me . Nothing seems to make me happy not even QVC lol! Remember when I use to tell u don't get sick cause when your sick I'm sick ? Well I feel so sick almost everyday help me mom , make me understand that I will see you again !! Remember at the hospital I told you not to worry about Larry and Dad well I feel like I let you down because I don't even know how to take care of myself . And remember I also told you if you were ready to go i was ready to let you go well I really didn't mean it ! I just told you that because I didnt want you to be in any more pain . I pray for you and me everyday ! Thank You mom for all the special things you have done for us this passed year you know what I am talking about . Ama, difficult as it is to continue life without seeing your smiling face or listening to your sound advice; we know that you are rejoicing with He who promises eternal life.  Not a day goes by that we don't think about you and miss you. We go on because we are blessed to have many wonderful memories. The week of November 4th-13th, 2011 as I recall it.

One year ago today Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Little did I knowÃ¢â‚¬Â
 
that we'd be having our last meal at home. you ate all your potato soup from 
Chili's. 
that we'd walk hand in hand down the ramp for the last time.
that I was walking in the hospital with you for the last time.
that the face you made at me with such pain was fading away.
that Sunday would be the last time you would give me advice and I'd stay with 2 questions that I didn't get to ask.
that you were feeling better through the week to prepare to leave. 
that on Friday it be the last time you asked me if I had gone to church, and we both laughed as I told you it was only Friday.
that you would switch meals with me for the last time, you really wanted to eat the burger.
that you were slowly fading that evening.
that on that early Saturday morning would be the last time I'd lay in bed with you.
that as I told you that Sunday morning I was leaving for awhile and told you that if you needed to leave that it was ok...that I would actually drive a couple of miles and I'd get the call that you had taken your last breath. The feeling of instant relieve is what I felt as I knew that you were pain free!
Little did I know that this would be our last week together. But I had 49 years and in that time we made lots of memories, some good and some not so good, But through it all you were always there for me. 
Thank you Mother for being my True Best Friend! You're forever in my heart!

Grandma, 
I miss you so much. I wanted to see you one more time before you left. But I couldn't cause I live so far away. But I was thinking about you daily. 
Grandma you taught me more then you know. I watched how well you treated everyone. How compassionate you were and how much love you had for everyone. I was always comfortable in your presence. I loved to see you standing over the stove, warming up tortillas. It was nice sitting at your kitchen table just hearing your voice. Whenever I visited your house.. the most loving place to be was in your kitchen. 
You could always make me laugh. 
You had a great way of telling stories and jokes. 
I look up to you as a woman. I want to be just like you. I want to love my husband and children unconditionally the way you loved yours. 
I also admire your love for God and devotion to the Lord. 
Grandma I would love one more chance to sit with you and hold your hand. But it will have to wait until we see each other again.

Tia what can i say you were always there and always had a good ear to hear all of us telling you our problems.  And you were always so loveable with every one of us.  I know you adore your sister Severa that you two were close and always found a way to be together.  You always care about my mother.  That is the only way I remember both of you.  Now you are together and it did not take you long to be close to her, Severa pass away May 27, 2011 and it did not take you long to follow and tio Macelo which mom was close to him too.  But now I don't worry  so much about mom because i know both of you are with her, so is tio Chue tio Lolo grandpa Lolo and our loving grandmom Juanita, that was a sweet heart too.  What can I say I knew and love all of you.  All of you will be in my heart forever because it's not easy to forget sweet people like all of you.  May the lord have all of you together and happy and greatful for the family you all created.  Love you Beatrice Robles Sanchez
