Thomas Vela Barrera

Thomas Vela Barrera passed away on April 17, 2016 at the age of 91. He was born on September 22, 1924 in Corpus Christi, TX to the late Jose Barrera and Petra Rios. Thomas was the last Barrera family member of his generation. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He is preceded in death by his son, Jorge C. Barrera. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Maria C. Barrera; children, Gloria C. Barrera, Sylvia M. Salinas (Juan), Josefina Barrera Carrillo, Thomas Barrera (Marcia), San Juan Barrera (Esmeralda), Rodolfo R. Barrera (Liz), Roberto Barrera (Anna), Marcos A. Barrera (Irene), David Barrera, Richard Barrera (Connie), Joe H. Barrera (Janis) and Olga C. Barrera. Thomas is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and other family members and friends.

Visitation will be held at Funeraria del Angel, 549 Cheyenne, on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm that same evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Pilar Catholic Church on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 10:00 am with interment to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
