She was born to Roman and Modesta Garcia on October 28, 1949 in Houston, TX. Maria grew up on a dairy farm where she had many childhood adventures with her siblings and cousins. The family relocated to Robstown, Texas in 1963 to be around family after her father suffered a stroke. As a teen, Maria taught at the Wesley Community Center. She graduated from Robstown High School in 1970 and went on to business school to become a secretary. During her career she worked for Solomon P. Ortiz and Aetna Insurance.
She met her husband, Eugene Soliz through friends of the family and they married on July 16, 1977. They then returned to Houston, TX to start a life together. Maria gave birth to Modesta Elena Soliz (Robbins) and Eugene Soliz, Jr. This is when she would focus on being a mother and a full time homemaker.
In February 1986, Maria and her family moved back to Robstown to be with extended family once again. Maria became an active member of the El Redentor United Methodist Church in Robstown. She served on the committee board as a bookkeeper and Sunday school teacher. Maria later returned to the workforce briefly working at Haggar Clothing and later as a homecare provider for nearly 10 years. Once retired, she concentrated on spending quality loving time with her grandchildren, David “Bubba” and Zarek.
Maria’s hobbies included cooking, baking, and arts and crafts. She loved to bake cookies and pies for the holidays. She sewed her children’s school clothes in their early years and continued to sew for herself. She made quinceanera dresses and decorations as well. Some of her favorite crafts were cross-stitching, sewing stuffed animals, making dolls, embroidery and various types of needlework. She loved to get crafty with anything she could get her hands on. But most of all she loved her grandchildren going out of her way to pick them up every weekend when they were babies and toddlers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roman and Modesta Garcia; two sisters, Angelica Soliz and Elida Maldonado and brother, Marcos Garcia.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene C. Soliz; children, Modesta Elena Robbins and Eugene Soliz Jr.; grandchildren, David Earl Robbins Jr. and Zarek Fury Robbins; her brother, Roman Garcia Jr. and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, TX for the kind and compassionate care of our mother. We also give our gratitude to Gloria Soliz for her help in getting us through the funeral process and the members of El Redentor church in Robstown for their assistance.
