On Monday evening June 5, 2023, at age of 93, Jose peacefully joined his bride Maria I. "Chila" Garcia in heaven. They were married 40 years before her passing in 1998.
In 1966, with 3 daughters & the odds against them yet placing their faith in God, they emigrated from Mexico to Corpus Christi hoping to find medical care for their 1st born. Eventually, buying a house & adding three more daughters to complete their happy family.
Jose worked for the City of Corpus Christi-Street Department until his retirement in 1992. He was a simple, humble man of few words who enjoyed watching boxing matches and baseball games. He never went anywhere without wearing his sombrero. He enjoyed drinking coffee with pan dulce no matter what the temperature was outside and until his last days coffee was his drinks of choice. He also enjoyed drinking Dr. Pepper!
As quiet as he was, he always had a way with words and lovingly gave some of his grandkids nicknames (listing a few): "El Campeon, la Seca, Juan Diego, el Pelon, el chapaneco, Iraq, and Lalo!" In his last days, through his ups & downs, he never complained and would say, "no me duele ni una uña!"
Jose is survived by six daughters: San Juanita Lara, Mercedes Lara-Torre(Hugo Sr), Leticia Lara-Hernandez, Marlen Lara, Ricki Lara-Monroy (Jorge) and Maricela Lara. He adored his eight grandsons, five granddaughters & 15 great-grandchildren! He is also survived by numerous family members who reside in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico!
Special thanks to our sister, Maria Mercedes (Mary), who has always been a mother figure to all of us. God has graced her with leadership, understanding, love, kindness and lots of patience. She has taken care of the family since our mom's passing and her faith has never wavered! We might not say it enough Mary, so thank you for all you've done to care for Janie, Mari and Dad. May God continue to be your strength! We know Mom is proud of you! Also, thanks to her husband Hugo, the brother we never had. He has been a magnificent brother figure and role model to us. He has always supported Mary. Hugo helped out with dad by getting his coffee started in the morning & making the infamous blueberry pancakes!
Dad use to tell us that calling out for "barbas de oro" would bring rain/wind to a hot sunny day! If we were going somewhere, to get us moving, he would repeatedly say "vamonos!" On Monday morning, dad must've been saying "barbas de oro" because it rained. Later that evening, the Lord said "vamonos" Jose, for you have fought a good fight, finished the race and kept the faith! You will be missed, DAD!
2 Timoteo 4:7 "He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, y he guardado la fe..."
