Bill was born in Los Angeles California to Helen and John D. Lusk. He grew up in Beverly Hills and was head Yell Leader at Beverly Hills High School. Bill also served as an Airman in the Air National Guard. He attended USC School of Architecture before he and his father founded John D. Lusk and Son in 1946, a real estate development company for which he served as Vice Chairman of the Board for 50 years.
Bill began his career building custom homes in the Greater Los Angeles area. He was up everyday before sunrise to work both in the field and in the office. Bill and his father were pioneers in homebuilding when it came to acquiring land, mapping, planning, and ultimately developing orange groves and ranch land in Orange County.
Here in Orange County there are thousands of homes that bear the Lusk name: East Bluff, Spyglass Hill, and Harbor View Homes South, in Newport Beach; as well as Nohl Ranch in Anaheim Hills and Marblehead in San Clemente. There were 40,000 homes built by The Lusk Company over fifty years, and their subdivisions reach throughout Northern and Southern California, Hawaii and Louisiana.
Bill was a 50-year resident of Newport Beach and an active member of the community. He actively supported the Newport Beach Police Department with a recognition luncheon for many years. As Director of the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce, he was instrumental in establishing Newport Beach’s Emergency Response Services. Through the years, Bill could be found on the bridge of the family boat, C’est La Vie, during the Christmas boat parade, which he served as chairman for fifteen years. He also loved spending weekends on the boat at Catalina with his family. Bill could be seen flying in the skies over Orange County in his vintage 1942 de Havilland Tiger Moth, or on the golf course with his wife Nancy at Big Canyon Country Club. Bill’s favorite thing was enjoying time with his family and friends. He loved seeing his dearest friends every Thursday night for many years, and lovingly referred to their gang as, “The Scourge of Newport!”
Bill was a philanthropist. In 1988 a gift from Bill and his father John Lusk established The Lusk Center for Real Estate at the University of Southern California School of Urban and Regional Planning. Additionally, Bill’s leadership and gift to The Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation helped establish The Lusk Research Campus at Torrey Pines in 1989. He also served on many boards and committees for organizations such as Big Brothers, City of Hope, and the 552-Club for Hoag Hospital.
Bill lovingly leaves behind his wife Nancy, his four children; Allison and her husband Chip Mauvezin, son Robert, daughter Maria and her husband Mark Olson, and son Dr. John Lusk and his wife Tania. Bill also had five grandchildren; Kendall Mauvezin, Mitchell Mauvezin, Alicia Lusk, William Lusk, and Josephine Lusk.
