He was born on January 14, 1940, in Safford, Arizona to Edna Holden Golding. Richard dedicated his life to the nonprofit sector, in the fields of hospital administration, and medical association management.
Following his graduation from Arizona State University with a Bachelor's degree in journalism, Richard worked for Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where he was instrumental in raising funds to build its second tower. He later worked in administration of Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, and segued to become Executive Director of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association, where he worked for nearly 30 years.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a lead photographer, and communications specialist, and as a yeoman (even filling cannons for the navy’s artillery). He embodied the values of service and dedication that would define his entire life.
In the 1970’s Richard started sculpting in bronze which were sold in stores such as Buffums, and I. Magnin in Beverly Hills (stores that later became Neiman Marcus & Saks 5th Avenue). Throughout his life, he was an avid photographer, collecting a number of cameras, always keeping up and pursuing the latest technology with photography classes. He made beautiful unique canvas prints, and family memorabilia books with his wonderful photography.
Richard was a loving husband to his wife of 62 years, Dale, a devoted father to his daughters, Beth Holden-Garland (Gary) and Jennifer Wierks (Jon), and proud grandfather to four grandchildren, including Jackson Garland and Avalon Garland. Richard is also survived by his sister, Deana Lake. He was predeceased by his mother and his brother, Jack Greenwell.
Richard was known for his kindness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Along with photography, he enjoyed car repair and restoration, cooking, and spent countless hours researching and developing the perfect pizza recipe. He pursued all of his interests with the same dedication and enthusiasm he brought to his work.
Richard will be remembered for his compassionate nature and enduring legacy of loyalty and dedication to his work and family. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Downtown Dog Rescue (https://downtowndogrescue.org), in honor of Richard's lifelong passion for animal welfare.
