

DR. MURRY DAVID SCHONFELD died peacefully at his home in Newport Beach, CA on Valentine’s Day 2016 at the age of 91. His wife Anita, the love of his life, was by his side. “Dr. Murry” as he was affectionately known is survived by Anita and his three children and their spouses; Bettina Simon (Bob Henry) Newport Coast, CA; Debra Korngut (Dr.Irwin) Dallas,TX; and Dr. Alan Schonfeld (Terri) Lone Oak, TX. He was cherished “Poppi” to six grandchildren Adam Solomon (Emily), Kevin Korngut (Juliet) Bryan & Alex Korngut, and Austin & Chloe Schonfeld all of Dallas,TX.
Born in New York, son of Jacob & Anna and brother to the late Alvin, Dr. Schonfeld graduated Cum Laude & Phi Beta Kappa from Ohio State University. There he met his future wife , the daughter of Leon & Esther Pastor. He earned simultaneous MD and dental degrees from Harvard and interned in Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, followed by his Radiology residency at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. After serving as Captain in the USAF in Ft. Worth during the Korean War, he moved his family to Dallas, where he resided and practiced medicine for 56 yrs. Practicing originally at Baylor Hospital, he was elected to The Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1957 and opened the first COBALT radiation treatment center in Dallas. Before retiring to Newport Beach, Dr. Schonfeld was an esteemed Clinical Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern for over 20 years where he first joined the Department of Radiology in 1956. He served on the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society-Dallas and received the Boylston Medallion in Nuclear Medicine from the American Board of Radiology where he certified in 1956. He was awarded a lifetime membership by the Texas Medical Association recognizing his long and laudable service to the Profession of Medicine.
While “medicine was his vocation, travel was his avocation”. He and his adored Anita traveled the world many times over. It‘s fitting he left us on Valentine’s Day. A man of utmost integrity, respected professor , teacher and scholar, lifelong student , music aficionado, tennis lover, patriot, world traveler, adored father, beloved grandfather and devoted husband ,he was the epitome of the Renaissance Man. He was a true gentleman and a gentle man. He left this world a better place.
In addition to his immediate family, Dr. Murry is survived by his brother-in-law Dr. Stan Pastor (Stephanie), and numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses its gratitude to his devoted caregiver, Sonia Dadivas, and extends its special thanks to his hospice caregivers. His light will shine in our hearts forever.
Graveside services are at 10a.m. Feb.17 Pacific View Memorial Park 3500 Pacific View Dr., Corona Del Mar, CA.
