Born Julia Fullager and raised in Brownsville and Portland, Oregon, she graduated with a bachelors degree in Psychology from Willamette University in Salem. She married the “Brownsville boy from across the street,” George Hume, in 1956. As the two were raising their three sons, she embarked on her career in public education, in Tustin Unified. In the late 1960s, she taught 5th grade at San Juan Elementary. In the 1970s, she founded and coordinated the Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program for TUSD. In the 1980s, she worked as a principal at Estock and Red Hill elementary schools and also led Hewes in its transition from an intermediate to a middle school. In the 1990s, she got her Doctorate in Education and became a district administrator—curriculum coordinator and assistant superintendent—before retiring in 1996. Aside from enjoying time with grandchildren, she and George worked with the lifetime-learning organization OLLI at UCI for a few years in early retirement. Since 2013, she had been enjoying life and friends at the Regents Point community in Irvine.
She is predeceased by her husband George and son Steve. She is survived by her sons Mark and John and six grandchildren.
