Dr. Barry Joel Newman (74) passed away peacefully on Friday, April 23, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family, friends, and a great deal of love. A wonderful father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and husband, he will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.
Born November 7, 1946 in Ogdensburg, New York, Barry grew up on a private dairy farm in nearby Kendrew Corners with his parents and favorite sister Karen. He received his undergraduate degree from SUNY Plattsburgh and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Missouri—Columbia, School of Medicine. While in graduate school, Barry was active duty in the U.S. Army Reserves serving in the special forces medical unit, and was honorably discharged in 1974. He had an exciting business career in the medical sciences field, having the opportunity to travel the world and meet Susan, the love of his life and wife of 37 years.
Barry’s many passions included woodworking and carpentry, and he could often be found crafting furniture from fallen trees, remodeling his home and personal paradise in Coral Springs, FL and building his very own “Wayside Pub,” which became a bustling hangout for family and friends. He was a devoted father and husband, a spirited golfer, had an enormous passion for life, and was the truest friend for whom one could ask. You could feel his incredible energy and spirit when he walked into a room, as he was always the life of the party.
Barry leaves behind his wife and best friend, Susan; his loving children, Jennifer and David Galluzzo, Alison and Gary Stallings, Matt, Alex, Kate, and Sarah Newman; five wonderful grandchildren, Alaina, Grayden, Garrett, Gabriella, and Gienna; his beautiful sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Ron Bettinger; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; and his guard cats, Lily and Kenzi. He is predeceased by his loving parents, Gordon and Frances.
In Barry’s honor and remembrance, please raise a toast of your favorite cocktail, put on your Hawaiian shirt and Panama hat, and dance with your loved ones. Hold them tight and let them know how much they mean to you.
