Mr. Johnson was born in Long Island City, Queens, New York to his late parents, Earl and Martha (nee Simpson) Johnson. One of seven children, Mr. Johnson graduated from Jamaica High School, and then entered the military. A proud veteran, he served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in one of the first all Black units of the 82nd Airborne, attaining the rank of Corporal.
After leaving the service, Mr. Johnson worked for the New York City Department of Sanitation. After training, he became a firefighter with the FDNY with Marine Company #7 on the waters of New York. He retired in 1978.
Upon retirement, Mr. Johnson took an active interest in his community. His military service inspired him to give of his time to the American Cadet Alliance and the Leatherneck Cadets, working closely with young men and women. He was instrumental in forming a Junior ROTC unit at the Wyandanch High School. Mr. Johnson was an active and dedicated member of Post #361 VFW of Wyandanch and the "Triple Nickels" - the 555th Paratrooper Infantry Association.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, the former Nannie Lee LaMarr, and his children Gilbert D., Jr. (Sheryl), Latonia, Lance H. (Debra), James G., Sandra Reyes and Diane Griffin; his brother Kenneth and his sister Muriel Fisher. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Bryce Petty, Brian Johnson, Adrienne Johnson, India Griffin, James D. Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Justice & Joshua Thompson, Kayanna and Carmen, and great grand children, Adrianna, Aniya, Mercedes and Nathaniel.
Cousins, nieces and nephews also survive, as well as many fond friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
