Richard was born on December 31,1960, to Willie & Wanda Shehane in Houston, Texas. He grew up there on Copperhead road surrounded by family and friends. He would often challenge his brother, Kevin, to silly things; like “who can eat this chili pepper?” and many other things.
He married and had a daughter, Kristen. He soon became the sole provider, and did everything he could for her. He sacrificed so much for his family. Constantly working to better his craft. He always provided and put others before him, and he strived to keep Christ first.
He loved to sing, he would sing anywhere; from karaoke to the school supply aisle at Walmart. He was always singing. It made his heart happy. Looking back, it was his way of communicating. When he didn’t have the words, he would always say it in a song.
He did things to the fullest, although stubborn (he got that from his dad) he wore his heart on his sleeve, and loved with his entire heart.
Then, on a cold evening in early 2012, on the dusty dance floor of a karaoke bar near Walden, love would find him in the form of a dance partner. Rick and Ginger began a whirlwind romance of dancing, dining, rodeo, fishing and other shenanigans. He became her Cowboy, and she his Cowgirl. They were married in April of the following year. They spent their entire marriage laughing, loving, learning and becoming best friends.
Through this connection, his family grew. He became a friend, a deeply respected friend, and stepfather to Rick, Cris and Roger. From the beginning he was a gentle, playful role model for those whom called him "Papa Rick" (Justin, Taylor, Katherine, Aaron, Dillon, Alli and Elliott).
He had a helpful way about him. If he wasn't knee deep repairing a family member's plumbing emergency, he was assisting the "Easter Bunny" with the plethora of eggs every year. In his spare time he could be found trying, unsuccessfully, to beat the lottery system through many hours of reading books. He loved fishing on the lake. His love of Dr. Pepper was superseded ONLY by that of God, family and music.
He had a life-long love affair with music. A singer, a skilled guitarist and a gifted writer.
He often wrote music on lunch breaks during the day and took it to the guitar at night.
He was a goofy, kind, gentle soul. If you had the privilege of knowing him, your life was better for it.
Though too short, we are thankful and blessed for the time we've spent with him on his journey here. And we are truly honored to call him friend, family and love..."
