After graduating High School in Stafford, Kansas, Jean earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1953. She married Jim Umbehr in 1953. They spent 56 wonderful years together. After starting a family and career in Kansas, Jean and Jim moved to various parts of the world, due to Jim’s work in the Oilfield. They lived in Nigeria, Angola, Singapore and London, England. While in Singapore, Jean developed her passion for quilting. Jim and Jean moved to Houston in the summer of 1977. After Jim’s retirement, they moved to “the farm” in north Conroe in 1994. All the grandchildren have fond memories of the “the farm.” Jean & Jim also purchased an RV around that time, and explored North America, visiting places from Alaska to Mexico. When not traveling, Jean spent her time in her sewing room "the annex", where she focused on quilting. She made quilts that were individualized works of art for friends, for family and for charity. As a ministry, she routinely donated her hand-made baby quilts to the Conroe Hospital, for new mothers in need.
Funeral to be held at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe on Saturday, November 5th, 2022, at 10am, with the visitation at 9am.
Jean will be placed in the mausoleum with her husband Jim Umbehr. Ray Larson, a longtime family friend, will deliver the eulogy.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sycamore Creek Ranch and Oasis Hospice for their assistance in Jean's care.
