Charline, named after her father Charlie, was actually born Norma Charline Jones as the last of six children of Charlie Ephron Jones and Gervie Mae Hales Jones in Belzoni, Mississippi. Her father owned a logging company. His profession provided her and her siblings with an endless stream of baby animals to raise and release back to the wild. She played sports in school, running track and playing basketball.
Her best friend Roberta Harper wanted to date another of Charline’s friends so came up with a scheme of a double date with Roberta and Charline’s friend and Charline and Roberta’s cousin, Thomas Logan. Tom and Charline started dating and then began going steady. They were engaged in October of her senior year. Tom was three years her senior and had enlisted in the Air Force. They were married after her graduation and between his training and his deployment overseas to Korea. The wedding was on June 26, 1957. They were married for 66 years.
A year later, Tom was assigned to Dyess Air Force base in Abilene, Texas. Charline joined him and they began their married life. Their two oldest children, Thomas and Paula, were born at Dyess. Three years later the couple and their young kids left the Air Force life and moved to Houston, Texas. Tom found work and eventually landed at a company called Mirapak where he worked building and repairing packaging machines. Tom was promoted to regional serviceman for the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York area. The family moved to Levittown, Pennsylvania in 1962 where the two youngest of their children,Timothy and Robert joined the family.
Another promotion in 1967 moved the family back to Houston. Charline was a stay at home. Her four kids, and sometimes her niece and nephew (Charlie and Teresa), kept her busy as a girl/boy scout leader, school room mother, little league team mother and, of course, general chauffer. Tom travelled a lot for work, so she was often alone with the kids. When not busy with kids and the home, she made a little time to join the local gardening club and worked on planting and arranging flowers.
In 1975, the family moved to Pearland, Texas. Charline began working outside the home for the first time. She started at the local Dairy Queen then moved to a warehouse and receiving clerk position at a discount store. She soon dusted off her bookkeeping skills from her high school courses and began working in the office at the store. Later she worked as an office manager at several manufacturing companies.
In 1986, Tom, Charline and their youngest child Rob moved to Terre Haute, Indiana where Tom had begun a new packaging machine business with a partner. Charline ran the office with the partner’s wife. Tom and Charline retired from the company in 2003 and moved back to Texas in 2005 to be near their children and grandchildren. They settled in Cleveland, Texas where Charline became active in the local Methodist Church. She joined Methodist Women and served on the Bereavement Committee. Charline and Tom also enjoyed playing cards, particularly hand and foot, with friends at the church.
Charline was preceded in death by her parents: Charlie and Gervie Jones; by her brother: Gordon Jones and by her sisters: Florence Gunter, Bonnie Worthy, Bernice Brewer and Shirley Odom. Charline is survived by her husband: Thomas Logan; by her children: Thomas Logan, Paula Logan, Robert Logan and Timothy Logan and his wife Mollie Logan; by her grandchildren: Dean Logan, Amberley Tankersley and her partner Eric Mendez, Shelbey Reutzel and her husband Aaron Reutzel and by her great-grandchildren: Carson and Riley Reutzel.
There will be a memorial service at First Methodist Church of Cleveland at 100 N. William Barnett Ave., Cleveland, Texas 77328 on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to your local food bank.
