Billy Joe (Pete) Hayes went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2022. Pete is survived by his wife of 70 years, Cloe Ann, two sons Billy and Danny, their wives Sheri and Pam, 7 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.
Pete was born on July 17, 1931 in Smithville, Texas to Milton and Mildred Hayes. It was here at a church revival where he met the love of his life Cloe Ann. They were married in Henrietta, Texas on September 18, 1952. Some of his last words were: I have a girl. Her name is Cloe Ann. I loved her then and I’ll love her to the end.
After graduating high school, Pete had several jobs. He began his career working for the MKT railroad, then Magnolia Pipeline Company, and eventually wound up in Bellaire, Texas securing a job with the Bellaire Post Office as a letter carrier. After walking 5 miles a day, on the same route for 35 years, he retired. Pete left such an impact on his customers that the local channel 13 news did an expose’ on him during the evening news. He was also a model family man. As a father, he was always there for his sons, teaching and a few times coaching them in sports. Over their years in grade school through high school, Pete never missed a game. His sons estimated this to be in excess of 500 games over those years. Pete also loved the outdoors, (especially fishing), and he made sure his sons could experience that same passion. He also taught them how to use the hands that the good Lord gave them. He was an amazing handy man at everything and he had the talent to build or repair anything.
Finally, and certainly not last, Pete was a Christian, baptized at an early age and maintained an unwavering faith throughout his life. His positive outlook, generous spirit, and kind heart left an impression wherever he went. Anyone that knew him could see that he trusted in the Lord. As is written in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. Rest in peace my dear husband, Dad, and Poppy. We miss you dearly.
