Andy Lowery gained his angel wings Wednesday, October 27, 2021. He passed on to heaven in his home with the love of his life Nancy by his side. After a long battle with dementia, Andy’s family is at peace knowing that he is no longer suffering and has joined his mother, father and brother.
Andy was born Needham Andrew Lowery on October 31, 1945, in Galveston Texas to Needham J. and Cleo Lowery. He was very proud to be BOI (born on the island) and always loved visiting his childhood home. He attended school in Texas City and graduated as an honor student from Texas City High School in 1963. Andy was an outstanding athlete, a member of the basketball, football and track teams throughout his school years. While he excelled at all things athletic, football was where Andy found his talent. He was awarded the most valuable player award in 1963, helping him earn a scholarship to play at Sam Houston State University. It was at Sam Houston that Andy helped lead the Bearkats to their first National Co-Championship in 1964.
In college, Andy was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, as well as student body president. In 1967, Andy was selected as a ‘ Who’s Who Among College Students. Andy met his forever love Nancy Purswell in his sophomore year. As the story goes, Andy announced to Nancy at the end of their first date that she would fall in love and marry him. Nancy says she laughed at this seemingly over-confident boast and yet they wed two years later. Andy and Nancy celebrated their 54-year anniversary in July 2021.
Andy graduated from Sam Houston in 1968 with a business degree, Andy began his career in group benefits sales with Travelers Insurance. He went on to hold sales management positions at Mutual of New York, John Hancock and Pan American Life. Throughout Andy’s professional career, he was routinely recognized as a top salesman. One highlight of his work career were the year end Pan American seminar trips he and wife Nancy attended where many lasting friendships were made.
Andy was a true family man and incredibly proud of his two children, Andrea and Lance. He is remembered by them to have been a great teacher of life lessons and an ever-present father. Known as ‘Pops” to his four grandchildren, Andy was a fun-loving grandfather who loved attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Andy was a devoted member of The Ark Church in Conroe and his faith in God was an important theme in his life. Andy and Nancy enjoyed couples Bible studies and he was very active with his Sunday school group and men's ministries for many years. He was a compassionate and loving man and his beliefs and faith led him to want to do more for local children. In 1997, Andy became a CASA volunteer where he advocated for the rights of children in the Montgomery County court system.
Any who knew Andy knew that he had a passionate love affair with the game of golf. Andy was known to be a competitive player that loved the tee box banter and course wagers. He enjoyed playing in many tournaments over the years and won multiple awards. He was consistently improving his game and played with friends until just a few years ago.
Andy is survived by His wife Nancy, children Andrea Urban (Gabe) and Lance Lowery, grand children Andrew and Ava Acree and Landon and Harper Lowery, sister Martha Jo Shillings (Gene), niece LaJeanne Hall, nephews Brian Reese, Larry Shillings and Jeff Shillings.
Friends and family of Andy knew a man who was full of charisma, witty, smart, articulate, opinionated, fair and passionate about life. Andy loved and defended his family fiercely and was a loyal and dependable friend. Alzheimers and dementia robbed him of so many things, but it never was able to steal his smile. It was beaming and beautiful until his last days. For the past two years, Andy and his wife attended events and gained support from a memory care ministry called ‘The Gathering Place’.
