Born the daughter of the late Cecil and Louetta Lail Huffman on March 19, 1938, in Conover, NC, Pat graduated from St. Stephens High School in 1956. She began her employment career in the office of Dr. Lawrence Caldwell, where she met her future husband, Billy Mac Smyre, whom she married on September 1, 1963, at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Conover. She later worked in the office of Bassett Furniture until she left the workforce to adopt their children. Pat reentered the workforce as a teacher's assistant at Thornton Elementary School after her youngest child started school. She later moved to the Newton-Conover Central Office as an administrative assistant, working for the Newton-Conover School System from 1976 to 1995. She worked as an administrative assistant with Hickory City Schools from 1995 until she retired in 2001.
Pat spent the later years of her life frequently traveling with her husband, visiting all fifty states of the U.S., Alaska being her favorite. She greatly enjoyed working outside with gardening and yard work, saying that she cherished her time mowing the lawn when she could use the time for private meditation.
Pat always had a strong religious faith and kept herself actively involved in church. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, later moved her membership to Beth Eden Lutheran Church, and then transferred her membership to Concordia Lutheran Church where she had active membership until the time of her passing.
In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her sister, Faye Rockett, brother-in-law, Bob, and their son, David; her brother-in-law, Charles Connor Jr; her father and mother-in-law, Malcolm and Sallie Smyre; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Pat is survived by her husband of 58 years, Billy Mac Smyre; her son, Jeff; her daughter, Lynette Smyre Roll, and son-in-law, Ken, of Newton; her sister, Jean Connor, of Conover; and numerous nephews and nieces. She is also survived by her beloved pet dog, Pepper, whom she adored since 2009.
Pastor Michael Geml will preside a memorial service to celebrate Pat’s life at Concordia Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 3:00pm. The family receiving will precede the service from 1:30pm to 2:45pm. A private burial will be held before the memorial service.
