Jack was born in Conover, North Carolina on November 7, 1932. He graduated from Newton Conover High School in 1950.
Jack enlisted into the United States Navy in 1951 and proudly served 23 years retiring in 1974 as a Senior Chief. After his naval career, Jack was employed by Old Dominion University in 1975 as the Building Manager for the Health and Physical Education Building and Field House. Jack was an active member of First Lutheran Church, loved playing golf, and loved his family and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy M. Smith; son, David C. Smith; parents, Clarence A. Smith and Willie Almetia Hollar Smith; brothers, Darvin Smith, Merritt Smith, Herman Smith; and sister, Nelma Smith Sigmon.
Jack is survived by his three children, Donald J. Smith, Carol M. Houtler (Wayne) and Jo Ann Hughes; two granddaughters, Leigh E. Liebert and Brooke A. Gates; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Patricia Wood; and much loved nieces and nephews. The family thanks Leona Alford for her love and dedication for the past four years, along with Deb Anderson from Trinity Hospice.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Rd in VA Beach. Funeral Services will be held 2pm on Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Norfolk, VA.
Jack will lie in state from 12pm - 1:30pm on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Drum Funeral Home Chapel, 509 1st Ave S, Conover, NC 28613.
A graveside service will take place at 2pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Conover, NC on Sunday, November 10, 2024 with Full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 2126 Saint Johns Church Rd NE, Conover, NC 28613.
