Born July 25, 1923 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Bard King Smith and Clara Emma Hoke Smith. Martha was a homemaker and a real “people person.” She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover where she was active in the Lady’s Aid Society, Bible Study, and helped with the Church Newsletter. Martha was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves, loved going to Daytona Beach, and enjoyed her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Robert Johnson; grandson, Richard Welch; son-in-law, Bobby Sigmon; brothers, Howard Smith, Glenn Smith; and sister, Annie Mae Hartline.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia M. Welch and husband, Carl, of Conover, Annie Lee Sigmon of Newton; brother, Ray Miller Smith of Conover; brother-in-law, Elliot Johnson and wife, Mona; sisters-in-law, Thelma Smith, Becky Baker; grandchildren, Dwayne E. Welch and wife, Amanda D., David Welch and wife, Connie F., Roger Sigmon, Leigh Anne S. Charles and husband, Michael; great-grandchildren, Lexie, Anderson, Addie and Grayson Welch, Caleb and Robert Welch, Audrey Sigmon, Tori and Anthony Charles; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. Brian Weaver officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 to 10:45 prior to the service.
