Born August 13, 1928 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Loy Austin Hewitt and Flossie Mae Sanders Hewitt. David was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Conover, NC, where he had served as a deacon and former choir member. For years, David taught Sunday School at Catawba Valley Nursing Home. He began his career as an architectural draftsman serving as an intern for Clemmer & Horton, Architects and later worked for several architects in Catawba and Caldwell Counties before retiring from Robert Clark, Architect, in Hickory, NC. He spent many months a year as a patient of N.C. Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia, NC during the years of 1931 through 1950 (osteomalitis, right leg).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Calvin Austin Hewitt, infant Franklin Neil Hewitt; brothers-in-law, Paul Burch and Brice Pope.
David is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carolyn Key Hewitt, of the home; daughter, Linda H. York of Hickory and her mother, Betty P. Hewitt; sisters, Gay H. Pope of Claremont, Betty H. Burch of Conover; sister-in-law, Betty M. Hewitt of Hickory; nieces & nephews, Kim Hewitt & wife Karen of Hickory, Lisa Cox & husband Tony of Hickory, Keith Burch of Conover, Kevin Burch & wife Terry of Conover, Teresa Mace of Granite Falls, Dana Martin & husband Michael of Newton; numerous great-nieces & nephews.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Woodlawn Baptist Church on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM. The Rev. Dr. Ed Yount, Rev. Chris Alley, Rev. Mike Daughtrey, and Rev. Grady Parker will officiate and burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 PM on Thursday.
