William Henry Hauser, 92, died December 26, at Havenwood Heritage Heights in Concord after a period of declining health. He was born in Astoria – Queens, N.Y., February 7, 1923, to Jacob and Catherine (Murray) Hauser. Bill graduated from Newtown High School in Elmhurst, N.Y. and attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. He served in the U.S. Army 84th “Railsplitters” Infantry Division during World War II. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes region of Belgium and was a prisoner of war in Germany from December 1944 to his liberation in April 1945. Bill married Alva Eliason of Whitestone, N.Y. in September 1950.
Bill was a New York City policeman for 20 years, retiring from the Department as a sergeant in 1966. He moved his family to Bow, N.H. in July of that year, where he was employed by Concord National Bank until his retirement in 1985.
He was an active community participant in the Town of Bow, serving as a charter member of the Bow Rotary Club, member of the Bow Men’s Club, Budget Committee member, Boy Scout Troop 75 Assistant Scoutmaster, Recreation Committee member and Youth Baseball Coach.
Bill was a member of the N.H. Chapter of American Ex-POWs and the 84th Infantry Division Railsplitters Society.
He was a life-long communicant in the Catholic Church, most recently a member of Christ the King Parish.
Bill and his wife, Alva, have lived in Concord since 1985, most recently at Havenwood Heritage Heights, where he was active in the men’s group and participated in various social events.
Bill was a wonderful, caring man, a dedicated husband and loving and supportive father, grandfather and greatgrandfather.
Family members include his wife, Alva, and their four children and significant others, William Hauser and JoAnn Willemssen of Bow, Kenneth and Martha Hauser of Deering, Nancy and Joseph Standley of Danvers, MA, and Michael Hauser and Simone Rueschemeyer of Stowe, VT. He was blessed with six grandchildren, Justin, Lindsey, Joseph, Thomas, Marley and Rory and one great-granddaughter, Camryn. Bill was predeceased by his brother John and infant son, Thomas.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 30, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., in Concord, NH. A short service will follow, with burial at Evans Cemetery in Bow immediately following.
